In the last few issues of Fresh Ideas I've been talking about 2010 and goal setting. I thought I would share one of my 2010 'stretch' goals with you - I plan to interview 15 interesting leaders this year and share these interviews with you in Fresh Ideas.
Watch for the Leadership Unleashed interviews coming soon!
Here are three things that are 's-t-r-e-t-c-h-i-n-g' me out of my comfort zone with this goal:
1. Applying a new skill set (I'm learning that conducting a decent interview is much tougher than I expected).
2. Finding time to do the interviews in my already busy schedule.
3. Finding interesting leaders who are willing to be subjects!
So, who would we define as an 'interesting leader'? In our business we run across tons of people doing extraordinary work and making huge contributions to their workplace, communities and families. They are not necessarily the people you would expect to be sharing thoughts on leadership because, in many cases, they are not the stereotypical leader as described in traditional media.
Each interview, captured on my flip video camera, is a frank, authentic and unscripted conversation where I am asking the leader about their thoughts on a number of topics such as who inspires them, the most difficult decisions they have to make as a leader and the lessons they have learned about being an effective leader.
You will have the option of watching and/or reading excerpts of each interview, whatever medium you prefer.
I have already begun the interview process and I'd like to send a special 'thanks' to each of the leaders who have already been interviewed. Thanks for helping me along my journey of trying to learn how to conduct an informative interview that is interesting to both watch and read - no easy task!
In the upcoming months, we will share interviews with these leaders:
Ralph Stephen, President, Royal LePage Atlantic Bob Ferguson, Vice President, RCI Jennifer Darling, Owner, Darling Construction Nancy Mathis, Executive Director, Wallace F. McCain Institute Chris Nadeau, Co-founder, Evolving Solutions Mike Tilley, Chief Executive Officer, CanLink Aviation
After interviewing a number of ‘interesting’ leaders I realized that one common thread is they all have a belief in ‘value based-leadership’, which Richard Barrett from the Barrett Values Center defines as ‘a way of making authentic decisions that builds the trust and commitment of employees and customers.’
I have a request for you. If you know of someone who you think is an interesting, value-based leader, please let me know.
